Village of Waterford History

Levi Barnes and Samuel Chapman established the area that would later become the Village of Waterford community on January 1, 1836, when they obtained waterpower rights on the Fox River. A dam was built and later a sawmill and flourmill were added which became the nucleus of Waterford. The Village developed as a result of the milling activities and got its name, “Waterford” because of its location at the shallow area of the Fox River where horse-drawn covered wagons could cross.

The Village would incorporate in 1906 and the first Village President, William Shenkenberg, was elected during the first election on February 20, 1906. The Village has since grown into a community of over four thousand residents, and offers shopping, industry and recreational opportunities.

It is the mission of the Village Board of Trustees to deliver open and accessible governance to the Village of Waterford.

To All Interested Persons:

The Racine County Board of Drainage Commissioners has requested and the WDNR has granted a temporary permit for this year.  We will be lowering the water level again this year to inspect for future repairs that may need to be done.  It will also allow us to inspect the entire system and evaluate other areas.  The temporary permit allows the RCBDC to lower the water level from Oct. 15 to Feb. 28.  We will do this by opening the gates wide open at the Rochester Dam during this period.  We want all residents to be aware that the water levels in the system, from Rochester Dam to Waterford Dam and from Rochester Dam to Wind Lake Dam will be extremely low during this period.  Local residents may be able to use the low water levels to do brush removal and cleaning or shoreland restorations.  If you wish to do so, be sure to contact Rachel Sabre with the D.N.R to see if a permit is needed.  You can reach Rachel Sabre at (414) 263-8601 or Rachel.Sabre@wisconsin.gov.
